April 18 Knowledge Check
One thing that really stood out to me during the lecture on health promotion and health literacy was the section on health literacy. Specifically I was interested in the video we watched on the communication barrier with some clients, and how it can affect their medication management. When I go to an appointment and am handed a packet of paperwork to fill out, I can sometimes be overwhelmed with the information presented. To imagine a person with a 5th grade reading level trying to digest information like that, I can see where there could be problems. Being an advocate for our clients, and making sure they understand what we are doing and why we are doing it, is such an important part of our job. Bringing our lingo down to their level is vital in helping them understand us better as well.
I also enjoyed learning about the Vision 2020 and Vision 2030. Not only is it important for us to promote the health and well being for all of our clients, but it is important that we aim for a healthy environment for everyone around us as well. By striving to live a healthy life, we can prevent disease from happening in the first place, which should be one of our overarching goals.
